Arrest Made In Connection With Attempted Rape In SoHo

Police say a tip led to an arrest Wednesday in connection with an attempted rape in SoHo. NY1′s Magee Hickey filed the following report.

Police say 28-year-old Glenn Williams of Scarsdale had so many prior arrests – more than 50 in all – that they say it was probably someone from his past who spotted him in one of the surveillance videos.

Police say he tried to rape and rob a 20-year-old woman on Thompson Street. The attack happened at 1:15 a.m. on October 8.

“She was approached from behind. She was punched in the head. She was sexually abused,” said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. “Her property was taken. A Mac computer was taken. I believe a cellphone was taken as well.”

Neighbors in SoHo said that the victim was an NYU student who suffered facial injuries.

Michael Robinson lives in the building where surveillance cameras took images of the suspect.

“Video footage showed that she was stalked by this guy, who came up behind her,” Robinson said. “He put her in a chokehold, and then he knocked her around a bit. And then, apparently he dragged her between two cars and he kicked her in the face, and then I guess that’s when he tried to rape her, and she got away, and he got away with her bag. And then, we saw video footage of him entering our building, and he just calmly took his jacket off, his shirt off, it was a plaid shirt, and covered the girl’s bag, and then he just walked out of the building like it was nothing.”

Williams is now facing attempted rape, sexual abuse, assault and robbery charges.

“I live on Thompson Street, just up the block, and it was surprising because crime does happen here, but it’s not usually in this neighborhood,” said neighbor Erica Mansouruan. “It’s so populated at night. And I know it happened on the street, which is kind of surprising. There’s usually a lot of people around.”

Police say it was a tip from Crime Stoppers that led to Williams’ arrest. He had been out on parole for less than two months.
