Comptroller candidate zings Stringer

The race for city comptroller got nasty in the first televised debate Tuesday.

Republican nominee John Burnett made some noise in the lopsided contest by laying into Democrat Scott Stringer — peppering him with a barrage of zingers.

“You’ve been in politics for 25 years and you owe a ton of favors. I’m surprised you still even have your own soul,” Burnett said.

“Maybe I shouldn’t be presumptuous,” he then added, “Maybe you actually sold that off a long time ago.”

While Stringer largely stuck to his own track record, he attacked Burnett for his ties to the financial sector and the national GOP.

“I would say to your Republican friends in Congress that this is not the way to treat cities like New York,” Stringer, the Manhattan borough president, said, citing the federal shutdown.

Burnett responded by bringing up infamous Democrats.

“My opponent’s trying to lump me in the same bucket as all Republicans. That’s like me saying that he goes around taking pictures and tweeting his private parts because Anthony Weiner did,” he said.
