A homeless man identified as John McConnoel, 56, was charged with forcible touching and sexual abuse after two 17-year-old girls said they were groped in separate incidents on the west side of Manhattan Thursday afternoon, authorities said. One of the sex crimes was witnessed by a Port Authority cop, who made the arrest, authorities said.

A homeless man prowling along storefronts near an entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel in Manhattan was arrested when he groped a teenage girl and was spotted by an alert Port Authority cop, officials said Friday.

The officer, who was posted in the vicinity of the tunnel entrance, saw the suspect grab the buttocks of a 17-year-old girl Thursday afternoon, and immediately ran over and apprehended the man, Port Authority officials said.

Moments later, a different 17-year-old girl came out of a nearby pizzeria and told the officer she, too, had been groped by the suspect, whom authorities identified as John McConnoel, 56. The second victim said the suspect had touched her breasts, officials said.

Other customers of the pizzeria told the officer they had seen the physically imposing homeless man, who stands about 6-foot-2, hassling women as they passed by on the sidewalk, officials said.

McConnoel was charged with forcible touching and sexual abuse. He was awaiting arraignment on Friday afternoon.
