Deadline Friday for Registering to Vote in New York

New Yorkers can register by filling out a paper application and mailing it to their local board of elections. The application, which is available online at http://www.elections.ny.gov/VotingRegister.html, must be postmarked by Friday. Voters with questions can call the State Board of Elections at (800) FOR-VOTE.

Under a program started last year, applicants who have a New York State driver’s license or non-driver identification card can register online at the Web site of the State Department of Motor Vehicles, https://my.dmv.ny.gov/.

Voters can also register in person at their county board of elections. In New York City, election offices in the five boroughs will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday; a list of the offices is available online at http://vote.nyc.ny.us/html/contact/offices.shtml.

The central office of the city’s Board of Elections, at 32-42 Broadway in Lower Manhattan, will be open until midnight to accept voter registration applications. New York City voters with questions can call the city’s Board of Elections at (212) VOTE-NYC.

Because of New York’s restrictive election laws, Friday is also the deadline for registered voters to enroll in a political party, or switch their party enrollment, if they wish to vote in that party’s primaries in 2014.

Voters wishing to check the status of their registration can do so online at https://voterlookup.elections.state.ny.us/.
