Deal To Reopen Lady Liberty Floated As DC Standoff Talks Continue

While the federal government shutdown continues, the Cuomo administration says the state is working on a deal to reopen the Statue of Liberty.

State officials are working to try to figure out what the move would cost.

The five boroughs have 33 sites under the jurisdiction of the federal park service, including the statue and nearby Ellis Island.

Meanwhile, there could be signs of progress on Capitol Hill as the shutdown enters its 11th day.

According to the Associated Press, House Republicans are offering a deal that would raise the nation’s debt limit and end the government shutdown, all in exchange for a package of spending cuts.

There was no official word from House leadership or from the White House as of noon Friday.

It is sure to be a major talking point later in the day when President Barack Obama meets with Senate Republicans.

If Congress does not raise the debt ceiling on October 17, the country will default on its debt payments for the first time ever.
