Gunfire Report Closes a Princeton Hall

Shortly before 8 p.m., the university alerted students and staff to stay away from Nassau Hall after “someone reported hearing what was believed to be gunshots inside,” according to a statement from the university’s communications office.

The town police locked the gates in front of the hall, a pre-Revolutionary War academic building that includes the offices of the school’s president and other officials, and set up yellow tape to block off the area.

At 10:30 p.m., the university announced “all clear” on its Twitter feed, adding, “Princeton Police have searched building, found nothing. No one hurt.”

An alert to the university said that the reports of gunshots were “unfounded” and that the area was “now clear.” It was not known what prompted the report.

Students strolled the campus during the alert, seemingly unconcerned, and news reports said that pizza deliveries to residence halls continued uninterrupted. The Daily Princetonian, the main campus newspaper, reported on its Twitter feed that two town police officers “with rifles” were seen leaving the campus.
