Housing Authority Reaches Out To Communities With Emergency Preparedness Events

The city’s public housing agency is reaching out to its residents to make sure they are prepared in the event of another emergency like Hurricane Sandy.

However, only about 150 of the approximately 6,000 residents of the Red Hook Houses showed up for a meeting Wednesday.

One resident told NY1 he wasn’t interested in what the agency had to say because of how they dealt with the storm.

“They left us in the dark for over two weeks, and then we asked them, they didn’t know. They weren’t prepared for it,” the resident said. “We had no elevators, had to walk up steps, no lights, no running water for over two weeks.”

“The conversation will continue, and we will get the word out there that residents should plan to be prepared for any type of weather-related emergency,” said Zodet Negron, a spokesperson with the New York City Housing Authority.

The next NYCHA emergency preparedness event is scheduled for next Tuesday at Campos Plaza on the Lower East Side.
