A group of Staten Island kids made the grisly discovery of a man’s body hanging in a park near their middle school Thursday, police and witnesses said.

The remains were of an unidentified Hispanic man, believed to be in his 40s or early 50s, who apparently committed suicide. His body was hanging from a pole that supports a cage and fence at a baseball diamond in Markham playground next to Intermediate School 51, the Edwin Markham middle school, on Houston St., witnesses said.

A group of Markham students cutting through the park on their way to class found the man’s body dangling over home plate about 7:15 a.m., horrified parents said.

No note was found at the scene, according to police sources.

“I feel bad for the guy,” said 11-year-old Kellen Caban, who attends I.S. 51 and heard about the discovery. “He might have had mental issues. I’m not going to judge him.”

Parents were given the option of either keeping their children in school for the day or picking them up.

Dozens of parents opted to take their kids home and could be seen filing out of the middle school about 10:30 a.m.

“They still are having classes, but some students were upset. Some of them were crying. … They saw what happened,” said Kellen’s mom, Ivette Caban, 42. “As a parent, I decided to take him home. He was upset, so I wanted to play it safe.”
