Marathon Runners Take On Staten Island Half

Runners in the Staten Island Half-Marathon warmed up Sunday for a bigger race down the line, all while helping to give Staten Islanders some kudos at the same time.

The Half-Marathon began in St. George.

The race is the centerpiece of the first ever Staten Island Day, a celebration of relief efforts in the borough and another fundraising effort to provide relief for those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The day includes carnival games, rock climbing, live music and events with the Staten Island Yankees.

“Our commitment is a longtime commitment to Staten Island. You know, this is one of the greatest running boroughs. This is such beautiful park land here, great running community here, and great community of Staten Islanders that we want to support every year,” said New York Road Runners President and CEO Mary Wittenberg.

Some NY1 employees also got into the spirit of things and ran in the 13.1 mile race.

More than $ 100,000 was donated through the event today.
