No De Blasio, But Lhota And Carrion Face Off On NY1

Two of the three candidates for mayor debating tonight on NY1 News.

Republican Joe Lhota and Independence Party candidate Adolfo Carrion are squaring off at the CUNY Graduate Center.

Democrat Bill de Blasio was invited but did not accept.

At Brooklyn’s Borough Hall subway station this morning, commuters who spoke with NY1 said that if they were De Blasio, they would show up for the debate.

“I think he should take the opportunity to put himself out there as much as possible,” said one New Yorker.

“He should be there in order to represent,” said another New Yorker.

Undecided voters seemed most concerned about De Blasio not being in attendance tonight, saying they want more information on all of the candidates before they make their choice on Election Day.

“I have some doubts about his leadership so I would like to see as much evidence as possible,” said one New Yorker.

“He’s running for office so he needs to get all of the support he can and that would probably help him if he did the debate to see what his views are and how he feels about things,” said another New Yorker.

Some people, though, said if the current public advocate doesn’t want to participate that’s his prerogative.

“He has a right to debate or not to debate,” said one New Yorker.

“It’s his decision so it’s up to him,” said another New Yorker.

Tonight’s debate starts at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a half-hour analysis show.
