One Of Three Teens Arrested In S.I. Convent Fire Charged With Hate Crime

Police say they have arrested three 19-year-old males, charging one with a hate crime, in connection to an arson at a Staten Island convent over the weekend.

Sources tell NY1 the trio were using the convent on the grounds of St. Joseph Hill Academy as a place to smoke and drink early Saturday morning.

It was there that police say Vincent Calder intentionally set the fire.

He now faces multiple charges including arson, criminal mischief and trespassing, all as hate crimes.

Christopher Sasso and Diego Tuso are charged with burglary, criminal mischief and trespassing, but not has hate crimes.

A nun was seriously injured when she jumped from a second story window to escape the flames.

The fire was labeled as suspicious after investigators determined it started in two different locations within the building around the same time.
