The Rev. Al Sharpton fired back Monday against four pastors who blasted him for ‘jet-setting’ across the country to promote his new book and his MSNBC show, blaming their comments on ‘jealousy.’
Whatever you want to do, I already do it better — that’s the Rev. Al Sharpton’s message for black ministers who called him out of touch.
“I challenge anyone to match what we do every day, all day,” Sharpton said Monday.
The preacher and civil rights activist fired back at four pastors who questioned his commitment to New York City issues.
The Rev. Johnnie Green of Mount Neboh Baptist Church in Harlem and three counterparts called out Sharpton for promoting his new book and his MSBNC show.
The four pastors plan to unify black New Yorkers around a new political power base and have invited more than 100 churches to an Oct. 24 rally.
Green, 51, slammed Sharpton on Monday for “jet-setting.” He dialed it back Tuesday, saying, “We are not fighting Rev. Sharpton.”
For his part, Sharpton blamed the broadside on “jealousy” and said that the pastors have reached out to make peace.
State Assemblyman Karim Camara (D-Brooklyn) backed up the firebrand.
“Rev. Sharpton has been actively engaged at the city, state, federal and international levels on issues that matter for people of color,” he said.
Harlem residents were split.
“Of course Harlem needs younger leaders but that has nothing to do with Al Sharpton,” said Rehsaan Harris, 39. But Julian Burrell, 35, said the activist has “sold out.”
