Mark Sanchez’s season is over before it begins after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Mark Sanchez’s 2013 season is officially over. The fifth-year quarterback underwent season-ending shoulder surgery by Dr. James Andrews Tuesday after Sanchez hurt his right shoulder in the Jets’ third preseason game against the Giants. Sanchez was in attendance at the Jets game in Atlanta Monday night.

Though the Jets placed Sanchez on the short-term IR earlier this season, it became increasingly apparent that Sanchez would likely have to have surgery to resolve his injury.

The future is uncertain for Mark Sanchez, who could be released by the Jets after this season.

This very well could end Sanchez’s career with the Jets. The quarterback’s expensive contract means he will likely be released in the offseason.

“After over seven weeks of hard work and intense rehab, I’ve been advised by Dr. Andrews and other doctors that my shoulder injury clearly needs to be addressed surgically,” Sanchez said in a statement released by the Jets. “The injury was recovering at an encouraging rate early on, and I avoided surgery as long as I could, but ultimately I was counseled by the doctors that they simply would have to repair my shoulder.

John Idzik also released a statement via the team.

“Throughout this process, our goal has been to provide Mark every opportunity to return this season,” Idzik said. “He and our medical staff have worked very diligently to that end and now it has been concluded that surgery is required. He will have our full support for a complete recovery.”
