Despite the government shutdown, which is now in its 12th day, Lady Liberty will once again welcome visitors, starting Sunday.
The National Park Service reached an agreement with New York State Friday to temporarily reopen the statue until October 17.
The state will pay nearly $ 370,000 to allow National Park Service employees to get back to managing the National Monument.
“We did an analysis, and it’s a better economic consequence of the state to pay the cost of operation for the Statue of Liberty rather than lose the tourism and lose the business dollars,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said on 1010 WINS.
Ferry trips to Liberty Island from Battery Park will resume at 9 a.m. Tickets go on sale at 8:30 a.m.
There is no word on when service might resume from New Jersey.
One ferry operator says they’ve had a 60 percent reduction in business since the shutdown.
