‘Suspicious’ fire convent had been target of vandals

A suspicious fire ripped through a Staten Island convent that had been targeted by vandals just two months ago, with the flames forcing one nun to jump out a second floor window to escape the early Saturday morning blaze.

Saint Joseph Hill Academy’s new building had trouble before it even opened, when mischief-making teens got inside late one night in August and caused $ 15,000 worth of damage, including rooms and halls flooded with water and bleach, broken doors, smashed video monitors and sinks full of gravel, according to a published report.

The damage was repaired by a generous contractor before the nuns moved in.

Five people were hurt in Saturday’s two-alarm fire, including a nun who was trapped on the second floor and fractured her back after leaping to safety, authorities said. She was taken to Staten Island University Hospital.

The fire was started in two different places within the building just after 5:30 a.m. and was under control by 6:34, officials said.

Four firefighters were also hurt but in stable condition at Staten Island University Hospital as well.

A woman who came to check on the nuns said: “We never had an issue until that new building” went up.

“There has been stuff going on,” she said, referring to the vandalism.
