Wake Held For Woman Shot By Police On Capitol Hill

A wake was held Monday night for the woman shot by police on Capitol Hill.

Friends and family of 34-year-old Miriam Carey, a Bedford-Stuyvesant native, gathered to bid farewell to the mother and dental hygienist.

“Carey was a friend of mine from way back when,” said one person. “It’s sad the way things went down.”

“We’re all brokenhearted over that,” said another. “That was just so sad. Right now, just a senseless tragedy, just so sad over that.”

Carey was gunned down by police near Capitol Hill after a run-in at a White House barrier on October 3.

The Capitol was on lockdown during the incident.

A lawyer for Carey’s family wants the officers who shot her to face charges, saying the use of deadly force was unnecessary.

Attorneys for her family say they are now trying to mourn.

“They’re holding up as good, as well as possible,” said Eric Sanders, a family attorney. “The problem is, like anything else, they’re trying to bury their sister while they’re trying to get answers to what happened, and that’s the problem. And all Americans should be outraged. We just watched a U.S. citizen killed right in the nation’s capital.”

Sanders filed a notice a short time ago, saying that the family intends to sue authorities.

Capitol police say they are investigating the incident.

Carey’s funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Brooklyn.
