Wall Streeter Burnett Attacks Stringer’s Political Ties In Comptroller Debate

Republican John Burnett and Democratic frontrunner Scott Stringer traded barbs about the federal government shutdown and the role of the private versus public sectors in an often-contentious debate for city comptroller Tuesday night on NY1 News.

Burnett, a veteran of the financial services industry, set the tone of the evening when he criticized Stringer as a political insider beholden to special interests.

“At the end of the day, people will decide who’s the experienced candidate and who’s the political hack,” Burnett said, touting his Wall Street credentials.

“The job of city comptroller isn’t to be a day trader — it’s to be a manager,” responded Stringer, the Manhattan borough president and former New York State assembly member.

Stringer, for his part, worked to tie Burnett to the GOP-led shutdown of the federal government over the Affordable Care Act.

“The impact on New York could be devastating,” he said.

Burnett said he supported a limited version of Obamacare and did not support the shutdown.

“I would not have held the country hostage,” he said. “My opponent is trying to lump me in with other Republicans. That’s like me saying that he Tweets pictures of his private parts just because Anthony Weiner did it.”

At one point Burnett accused Stringer of failing to attend some board meetings, saying, “You just didn’t show up. You’re a failure.”

At another point when Burnett interrupted him, Stringer said, “Would you mind? I know you’re new at this.”

This is Burnett’s first time running for public office.

Meantime, two of the candidates for mayor will debate each other Wednesday on NY1.

Republican Joe Lhota and Independence Party Candidate Adolfo Carrion will go head to head at the CUNY Graduate Center at 7 p.m.

NY1′s invitation to Bill de Blasio to take part is still open but his campaign has repeatedly turned down NY1′s requests for him to take part, saying he’s already agreed to do three other debates.
