De Blasio’s Daughter Chiara Reveals Her Battle With Drug Abuse And Depression

Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio’s daughter, Chiara, posted a video to YouTube to talk about her battle with substance abuse and depression.

In the video, posted by Chiara’s account on Tuesday, the 19-year-old daughter of the incoming mayor said she’s had clinical depression her entire adolescence.

“It made it easier, the more I drank and did drugs, to share some common ground with people who I wouldn’t have. It didn’t start out as a huge thing for me, but then it became a very huge thing for me.”

She speaks to the camera about her experience. She said she got help and saw a counselor and encouraged other people with depression or substance abuse problems to seek help.

The short synopsis of the video reads: “For many, the holiday season is a time for joy. But it’s also a time when many of those battling depression and substance abuse find their struggle most difficult. In the hopes of helping others, Chiara de Blasio wants to share her personal story … If you think you have a problem, don’t wait. Ask for help. Talk to a friend, family member, or health professional today.”

Chiara is a sophomore in college in California. The announcement is quite unusual, but it may be a sign that the family wants to get out in front of an issue that could have been released in a news story.
