The city will start closing the Queens-bound outer roadway on the 59th Street Bridge at night after the death of an off-duty cop followed two other tragedies on the notorious bridge.
Starting Monday, the single lane will be closed to cars between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. everyday to reduce speeding and unsafe driving at night, according to the DOT.
NYPD traffic agents will be stationed at the bridge to handle the closing and reopening.
Elisa Toro, a 10-year NYPD veteran, was killed early Dec. 11 after she drove onto the outer lane, struck a guard rail on the exit ramp, and went over a concrete divider. Her landed in front of a storefront on Queens Plaza South.
Toro’s death was the third since 2011 at the ramp.
Two people were killed that year, after reconstruction of the bridge plaza merged two exit ramps into a single lane onto Queens Plaza South.
The DOT added other safety measures such as aluminum reflectors and an electronic display of drivers’ speeds.
More than 180,000 drivers use the bridge everyday, according to the DOT.
