Denis Slattery State Senator Jeff Klein(D-Throgs Neck), center, gets a helping hand from fellow state Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. (D-Morrisania), Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj(D-Pelham), and Councilman Ritchie Torres(D-Fordham) at his reelection kick-off Tuesday afternoon. STATE Senate Co-leader Jeff Klein announced his reelection bid for his 34th Senate District in an informal backyard event attended by a who’s who of Bronx politicians.
The campaign kick off Tuesday was held steps from Klein’s Morris Park home, in the shadows of P.S. 108 on Neill Ave., where he attended elementary school.
“You have put your trust in me, and you are who I fight for everyday,” Klein told a crowd. “Having the chance to make a difference in your lives has made me the person I am, and I want to spend the next 20 years doing the same thing.”
Klein, 53, drew endorsements from Bronx lawmakers including fellow Senator Ruben Diaz Sr., councilmembers James Vacca (D-Throgs Neck) and Ritchie Torres(D-Fordham), Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and former Beep Fernando Ferrer.
Mariela Lombard Former Councilmember G. Oliver Koppell says he is, “close to announcing, but not announcing,” a bid to challenge Senator Klein. But at least one former elected official doesn’t want to see the leader of the Independent Democratic Caucus back in Albany.
“Mr. Klein has been a traitor to the democratic party,” said ex-Councilman Oliver Koppell, a former state Attorney General who said he may seek to run against Klein in the senate race.
