The pontiff marked Palm Sunday by hopping off his Popemobile to snap selfies with young people, kiss babies and sip tea passed to him by his admirers in a packed St. Peter’s Square.
Pope Francis waded into the crowd after ditching his prepared homily during Palm Sunday Mass and spoke entirely off the cuff.
In his impromptu homily, Francis called on people, himself included, to look into their own hearts and examine their lives.
“Where is my heart?” he asked while opening the Holy Week for the Catholic Church.
Francis shed his red vestments for his plain white cassock before greeting about 100,000 people in the square.
He first posed for selfies with youngsters from Brazil who had carried a large cross into the square and then hopped from his vehicle when he spotted Polish kids clamoring for their own photos.
The Pope even accepted a big hug from a little girl who wrapped her arms around his neck.
