Schools Chancellor Marks 100 Days in Office With Unusual Policy Speech

Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña marked her first 100 days in office with an unusual policy speech outlining some of her goals.

Fariña spoke Saturday morning about education issues that confront the de Blasio administration. She talked about implementing the city’s universal pre-K program.

She also wants less reliance on high-stakes testing.

And she acknowledged the need to end the standoff with charter schools over co-locations in public school buildings.

Fariña says her approach to managing the school system is different from the previous administration’s.

“If you’re searching for answers to the challenges of our work, they lie in the room. In this room and in the classroom. For too long the education efforts in this city were outside the classroom. That changed 100 days ago,” said Fariña.

Farina said a new effort to engage parents in the school system will be made.

She says the Department of Education will host 3 conferences with parents in May and June.
