Schumer: Iraq, Afghanistan War Vets Deserve Ticker-Tape Parade

A ticker-tape parade for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could soon be headed up Broadway if Sen. Charles Schumer gets his way.

In recent years, the Canyon of Heroes has held ticker-tape parades for local sports teams celebrating championships, but the city has hosted parades for veterans following conflicts as far back as World War II.

Should New York City host a parade to honor America’s troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan? Would you attend? Join the conversation on “The Call” at 9 p.m. with NY1′s John Schiumo or email your thoughts.

Schumer says it’s time to start planning a parade for veterans now that the Iraq War is over and combat operations in Afghanistan are expected to wrap up by the end of this year.

“Even though there have been very divided views in America about Iraq and even Afghanistan, just about every American has treated our newest vets with the respect and acknowledgement they deserve. Therefore it is appropriate not to wait and we should give them one of the grandest honors to bestow all our veterans and that is this parade down the canyon of heroes,” Schumer said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio echoed Schumer’s call in a statement, saying, “The brave men and women who have selflessly served our nation with courage and skill in Iraq and Afghanistan deserve recognition for their sacrifice. I stand with Senator Schumer in his call for a parade to honor our veteran heroes, and New York City would be proud to host this important event.”
