Crews Battle Brush Fire Near Goethals Bridge

Crews were working Monday night to fight a brush fire that broke out near the Goethals Bridge on Staten Island.

Officials say the fire started shortly after 8 p.m. Monday and tripled in size between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

According to officials, the fire spread from about 30 yards in length and 10 yards wide at 9:30 p.m. to about 100 yards in length by 10:30 p.m.

Flames from the brush fire were shooting about 30 feet in the air, according to officials.

The Goethals Bridge remained open in both directions, but several secondary roads around the highway were closed as crews fought the fire.

Officials say crews at the scene had difficulty finding fire hydrants, and that wind was creating an issue for crews trying to put out the fire.

A fire chief told NY1 that there were no injuries and no structures threatened as of 11 p.m. Monday.
