Today is Mayor Bill de Blasio’s 100th day in office, and he is set to mark the occasion by delivering a speech at Cooper Union this afternoon.
As the mayor reflects on his first 100 days, our exclusive new poll finds New Yorkers are evenly split on his handling of charter schools.
The NY1/New York Times/Siena College survey shows 43 percent of New Yorkers disapprove of de Blasio’s handling of the charter school issue; 41 percent approve.
Generally speaking, 63 percent say charter schools are a good idea and just 28 percent say they’re a bad idea.
“There seems to be a lot more good things that have come that you hear out of what’s happening with charter schools, and that they’re reinvigorating and bringing energy to schoolchildren and New York City kids that needed a change in what kind of education they were getting and the public schools weren’t getting it done,” said Jennifer O’Neill, a poll respondent.
The poll also found most voters think charter schools should be allowed to share space with traditional public schools.
But a majority also agree with the Mayor that charters should be charged rent.
