He’s headed for victory in Tuesday’s election — but Gov. Cuomo is unlikely to match the overwhelming margin that gave him a strong mandate to run Albany four years ago.
Analysts said the 63 percent that Cuomo grabbed against GOP rival Carl Paladino in 2010 appears out of reach this year, as some progressives abandon him.
In a sharp slap just hours before the polls opened, national teachers union president Randi Weingarten told her members Monday that she’s voting the Democratic ticket, but bypassing the governor.
“If I lived in another state, I’d be starting with governor — but not in New York,” said Weingarten.
Cuomo had hoped to score a historic victory over Republican Rob Astorino, establishing himself as a force on the national stage.
Analysts say that’s not going to happen.
“It will be difficult for Cuomo to break 60 percent,” predicted Siena College pollster Steve Greenberg.
In the most recent Marist College poll last week, Cuomo was ahead of Astorino 56 to 30 percent. Green Party contender Howie Hawkins was sapping 6 percent.
In legislative races, Republicans were hoping to pick up three seats to win outright control of the state Senate.
Cuomo sought to rally the Democratic base Monday in Times Square, where he was joined by running mates Attorney General Eric Scheiderman and Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.
The governor He pounced on a comment made by an Astorino supporter that New York voters are “lazy,” claiming Republicans are trying to divide upstate and downstate.
Mayor de Blasio, who also attended the rally, said Democrats would eventually emerge on top in the state Senate, in 2016 if not this year.
“2014 is Step One,” he saidat the Time Square rally, where he arrived after Cuomo spoke.
Astorino was upbeat during a whirlwind day of campaigning and radio appearances.
“If our voters come out, Cuomo is toast,” he said on Albany’s Talk 1300. “Cuomo can’t defend his record. He has no vision for a second term.”
