City Council Approves Municipal ID Card Legislation

The City Council on Thursday approved a measure to start issuing municipal identification cards.

It passed 43 to 3 with two Council members abstaining.

The cards will allow New Yorkers including undocumented immigrants and the homeless better access to city services.

Supporters have been pushing for the cards, saying it will make life easier for those who need them the most.

Critics say the ID cards are a workaround that supports illegal immigration.

If Mayor Bill de Blasio signs the bill, New York will join other cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco which also have municipal ID card programs.
