Funnyman James Franco will take a leaf out of Walt Whitman’s book.

The 36-year-old “This is the End” star will join punk rocker Patti Smith in the Rockaways Sunday to read nature excerpts by the American poet in celebration of the reopening of Fort Tilden, a national park and beach that was battered and closed after Hurricane Sandy.

“James wanted to do something special considering the relief efforts after Sandy and the reopening,” said Shayna McClelland, a spokeswoman for MoMA PS1, which partially organized the event.

The do-good actor, director — who has lent a hand in the storm-torn area’s cleanup — and acclaimed artist Smith, who lives in the Rockaways, will wrap up the free “Rockaway!” arts festival kick-off event with their separate spoken word performances at 7 p.m.

Whitman, an 1800s essayist considered the “father of the free verse,” was the inspiration behind Smith’s MoMa art exhibition, which includes five granite stones placed along Fort Tilden’s trails inscribed with Whitman’s work.

The kick-off will be held at Fort Tilden, at 169th St. and Rockaway Point Blvd., Sunday, June 29, beginning at noon. The festival runs through Labor Day.
