Manhattan College dedicates student building to Ray Kelly

Manhattan College dedicated the $ 45 million Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons building last week on its campus in The Bronx but, according to The Post’s Keith J. Kelly (no relation), NYC’s former top cop acknowledged that it would not have been possible without the backing of No. 1 donor and classmate Thomas O’Malley.

Both became officers in the armed services after graduating, but O’Malley went into the oil-refining business.

Billionaire O’Malley, ex-CEO of Tosco, contributed $ 10 million and spearheaded the drive to raise funds for the five-story, 70,000-square-foot structure on the college’s Riverdale campus that rose from an old parking lot and now connects the school’s north and south campuses.

“It would not have been possible without the outstanding philanthropy of Tom O’Malley and his wife, Mary Alice,” acknowledged Kelly. “He chose to name it not after himself or a relative, but a career civil servant.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo was also in attendance for the ribbon cutting, and congratulated Manhattan College President Brennan O’Donnell on the opening of the building and for “making it an even better competitor to Fordham.”

But Cuomo did say that he and Kelly had some common ground — they are both alumni of Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens.

“I hope the Marist brothers at Molloy did a better job of preparing Ray for the Christian Brothers at Manhattan than they did preparing me for the Jesuits at Fordham,” he joked.
