De Blasio not consulted before Cuomo’s mandatory Ebola quarantine

Mayor Bill de Blasio wasn’t consulted prior to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s order to quarantine air travelers who’ve had contact with Ebola patients in West Africa.

De Blasio brushed off questions on whether he supported the policy. His Health commissioner, Dr. Mary Bassett, questioned the new protocol on Twitter, suggesting it could discourage Americans from going to Africa to help with the outbreak.

When asked Saturday about Cuomo’s unilateral move, de Blasio said:

“This is not about feelings. This is not about personalities. This is a crisis in which we all have to hang together to protect our people…We understand in a fast moving situation that sometimes there will be moments where the communication is not everything we want it to be.”

Cuomo and NJ Gov. Christie announced the new regulations just a day after Cuomo and de Blasio jointly urged calm in the wake of a Harlem doctor Craig Spencer’s Ebola diagnosis.

Cuomo said he didn’t inform the mayor because the decision “wasn’t city specific. It was every city in New York, every city in New Jersey. And it’s an airport protocol. I spoke with the mayor about it last night and he can obviously speak for himself, but the mayor and I are totally coordinated on everything and we have been since day one.”
