Workers Break Ground on Replacement of 9/11-Destroyed Church

More than 13 years later, the only place of worship destroyed on 9/11 is just starting to be rebuilt.

Organizers held what they called a “ground-blessing” ceremony today for the St. Nicholas National Shrine.

Former Governor George Pataki and Senator Charles Schumer spoke, and former Mayor David Dinkins participated in a dedication.

The Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was crushed in the collapse of the south tower.

A new church will be built near the old site. The developers released this rendering of the structure.

Archbishop Demetrios of America says the top-level will be a non-denominational bereavement space—open to anybody.

“Like a peaceful island in the midst of a turbulent ocean, it will be a refuge for people in the need of spiritual comfort, regardless of their specific religious beliefs or un-beliefs. Above all, this resurrected St. Nicholas church will be a moment declaring the victory of good over evil, of love over hatred,” he said.

Construction is expected to be finished during the summer of 2016.
