NYPD Ramps Up Presence in Wake of Ottawa Shootings

The New York City Police Department has beefed up security at sensitive Canadian locations around the city after a gunman stormed Canada’s parliament building on Wednesday.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is now calling the rampage an act of terror.

Heavily armed police units began stepping up patrols yesterday outside the Canadian consulate in Midtown, and the Canadian Mission to the United Nations on the East Side.

The move came after Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, 32, opened fire in Ottawa.

Authorities say he first shot Corporal Nathan Cirillo, 24, to death while Cirillo was guarding the National War Memorial.

The shooter then entered Parliament where he fired off more shots.

He was eventually shot and killed by a sergeant-at-arms inside the building.

Investigators say Zehaf-Bibeau was a recent convert to Islam, and they believe he acted alone.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper called this the country’s second terrorist attack in three days.

A man he describes as an “ISIL-inspired terrorist” ran over two soldiers in a parking lot in Quebec on Monday.

Harper said his country will not be intimidated, adding, “I have every confidence that Canadians will pull together with the kind of firm solidarity that has seen our country through many challenges. Together, we will remain vigilant against those — at home or abroad — who wish to harm us.”

President Barack Obama called the shootings outrageous. He also said he spoke with Harper by phone and pledged America’s support.
