Thousands Run in Dash to Finish Line 5K

Marathon runners are resting ahead of tomorrow’s big race, but thousands took part in a shorter race Saturday. NY1′s Polly Kreisman filed this report.

For those running the New York City Marathon—it’s a final warm-up. For everyone else, it’s a chance to cross that famous finish line.

Eight thousand people laced up for the Dash to the Finish line 5K.

“This gives everyone a little taste of the excitement, we just, you know, want to give everyone a chance to share in the finish line that New York City really creates,” said New York Road Runners President/CEO Mary Wittenberg.

Runners made their way from just outside the United Nations to the Marathon finish line in Central Park.

That chill in the air? Not a problem.

Kreisman: “They want a little chill, a little cold, right?”

Runner: “A little cold, a little chill. Around fifty degrees, tops.”

Like the Marathon itself, the 5K draws participants from all over the world.

“All the way from Las Vegas, Nevada!” one runner said.

“Germany!” another said.

“I came here all the way from Poland,” said another.

For the New Yorkers who participate, it’s a chance to express their love for their city.

“Running in my own city, down Sixth Avenue? Beautiful. I loved every second of it,” one New Yorker says.

Coming in first in Saturday’s 5K was Donn Cabral of Annandale, New Jersey.

“Electric atmosphere. You could really feed from people on the sidelines, and it just gave me a taste for what it will feel like to run a Marathon in a few years,” said First Place Finisher Donn Cabral.

Even the person who finished last had something to brag about.

Kreisman:“I know it’s rude to ask someone their age…”

Runner: “I’m 81.”

Kreisman: “How many marathons have you run?”

Runner: “Nineteen New Yorks plus others.

Kreisman: “What did you do today?”

Runner: “I crossed last on the finish line is what I did—but it was fun to have done.”

So for the big event Sunday, spectators are advised to dress warmly. It’s supposed to be cold and windy but hopefully not wet.
