Florence Levine has lived in Brooklyn all her life, which on Sunday, became a century. NY1′s Jon Weinstein filed the following report.
Florence Levine has a great outlook on life, and how can you blame her? She’s certainly seen plenty of it.
“Everything is beautiful,” Levine says.
Levine turned 100 years old on Sunday, surrounded by friends and family. She has four great grandchildren.
“It’s wonderful. It’s very wonderful. Very good. Look at all the people I know. Oh my goodness,” Levine says.
Levine has lived in Brooklyn her entire life. In fact, to celebrate her, the Borough President declared Sunday Florence Levine Day.
“Started out in Bay Ridge, then we lived in Sheepshead Bay for a while and then would up here in the Midwood section,” says daughter Joan Robinson.
Her family talks about her many contributions to the community. When she was born in 1914, women were still six years away from winning the right to vote in the U.S.
Levine became involved in the League of Women Voters, always urging others to exercise their rights.
“No matter what the weather is, how important our vote is and we were women and we got the right to vote and we better make sure we do that every single election,” says daughter Linda Alboher.
She’s a painter too, and it’s her pleasant demeanor that her family says makes her so wonderful.
“It’s very cool because it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” says great grandson Manny Alboher.
“Even if she didn’t feel good when she was 98 she would say, ‘I have to wait til I’m 100!’” Linda Alboher says.
“They all came here on account me?,” Levine asks. “Oh my goodness. How do you like that?”
Amen to that.
