Bratton: Top NYPD cop’s resignation was a ‘setback’

NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton admitted Sunday that the unexpected resignation of the city’s highest-ranking black cop was a “setback” to his crime-fighting agenda — and a move that left him filled with disappointment and regret.

“We had a hiccup — a major hiccup, actually — on this past Friday,” Bratton told “The Cats Rountable” radio show on AM970.

Bratton said ex-Chief of Department Philip Banks III’s sudden decision to quit rather than take a promotion to first deputy chief was “something that I regret,” calling Banks “somebody that I worked very closely with over the last ten months.”

“So I’m disapppointed that I won’t have the opportunity to work with him in the Number 2 position,” Bratton told host John Catsimatidis, the supermarket magnate and failed mayoral hopeful.

Bratton said the NYPD would press ahead with other planned promotions on Monday, adding that there would be “a lot of changes at the top, all of them good.”

“And again, the decision by Phil Banks not to accept the position was a setback, but fortunately we have a very deep bench here at the NYPD. A lot of talented players, so we’ll quickly fill the gap,” he added.

Bratton also said he planned to name his new first deputy “before the end of the week.”

He previously said that announcement would be made Wednesday.
