Mayor Announces Three-Year, $150 Million Initiative to Turn Around Struggling Schools


Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that under the “School Renewal Program,” $ 150 million will go toward turning around 94 struggling schools.


It will include funding for medical, dental and psychological services as well as an extended school day and more master teachers and principals’ coaches.


The three-year program could result in schools being shut down if they do not improve.


The program will benefit 43 schools in the Bronx, 27 in Brooklyn, and 12 each in Queens and Manhattan. No Staten Island schools are included in the initiative.


The mayor says he hopes the program will improve strengthen bonds between communities, schools and families.


They mayor says he is looking for state aid to help fund the program.
