Worker killed by tape measure that fell 50 stories

A worker died in a freak accident Monday morning, after a tape measure fell 50 stories from a Jersey City construction site, police said.

The victim, who is in his 50s, was delivering Sheetrock to a 50-story apartment building under construction at the intersection of Marin Blvd. and Christopher Columbus Drive around 8:45 a.m.

Without a helmet on, he walked over to the building and was struck by a 1-pound tape measure that had fallen off the belt of a construction worker on the top floor of the building, according to cops.

The tape measure fell 50 stories, then bounced off a piece of metal equipment 10 feet from the ground and hit the man in the head, knocking him unconscious.

Cops found him in serious, non-responsive condition at the scene. He was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, where he later died.

His exact cause of death is still unknown.
