NYPD Officer Critically Injured by Ax-Wielding Man

The New York City Police Department says an officer was critically injured Thursday after being attacked by an ax-wielding man in Queens.

The incident took place around 2 p.m. near Jamaica Avenue and 162nd Street.

Police Commissioner William Bratton says it all began when an unidentified man approached two officers patrolling the sidewalk, striking one of them in the arm with the hatchet.

The suspect then struck a second officer in the back of his head.

Two officers nearby approached the scene and fired multiple shots at the suspect, killing him.

A bystander who was struck by the resulting gunfire suffered minor injuries.

Both wounded officers were transported to Jamaica Hospital.

An investigation is ongoing.
