Community Members Call for Justice Three Months After Eric Garner’s Death

Three months after the death of Eric Garner, community members gathered on the steps of Staten Island Borough Hall Friday night.

They’re calling for justice after Garner’s death in police custody on July 17.

The medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide, citing a chokehold and chest compressions.

Garner’s family is suing the city in a $ 75 million lawsuit.

“It looked like my son’s death would’ve made a difference. The police would have been more, you know, perceptive when they’re making arrests,” said Gwen Carr, Eric Garner’s mother. “But some of these people that they’ve been arresting lately, they’ve been doing horrible things still, and I don’t understand it.”

“We want justice,” said Cynthia Davis, president of the National Action Network on Staten Island. “Again, this is a homicide. It was ruled a homicide. It was an illegal chokehold. The man is dead, and nothing has been done yet.”

Following Garner’s death, Police Commissioner William Bratton ordered the entire New York City Police Department to be re-trained. That process is expected to begin next month.
