The NYPD heckled a comedian in the middle of his stand-up routine at a Chelsea theater while arresting a suspected robber.
But the quick-witted Adam Newman, 31, just incorporated the cop’s expletive-ridden outburst into his routine.
A crew of cops entered the Upright Citizens Brigade’s Chelsea theater around midnight, shining their flashlights into the audience as they searched for the suspect in the middle of Newman’s set.
Video shows the funnyman continue to work the crowd as the arrest unfolded, telling the audience, “This is the first time this has happened.”
At one point, he called out to the cops for interrupting his stage time saying, “I have no idea what’s happening right now. You guys couldn’t have waited ‘til after my set?”
“Obviously not,” one officer quipped back.
But a second officer took it a step further, yelling “Obviously shut the fu– up!”
The veteran comic noted that it was “the weirdest heckle” he’d ever experienced.
“I’ve dealt with hecklers before. I can put a heckler in their place,” Newman said as the crowd laughed, adding that it’s a little different to say “shut the fu– up” to a cop.
While it is still unclear what prompted the cops to cuff a man in the middle of his show, Newman tweeted Monday morning that he had found out more details about the arrest.
“Apparently the dude was accused of robbing someone, but once he was arrested, said the accuser was trying to rob him,” he tweeted. “That’s all I know.”
Newman does stand up in “The Half Hour,” a TV series on Comedy Central. He also regularly performs on the “Late Show with David Letterman” and warms up the crowd for HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.”
In a statement, the theater said, “The Upright Citizens Brigade and its employees fully cooperated with law enforcement and allowed police officers to enter the theater on Saturday evening during a show. The police removed a patron for questioning, but as far as they know there was no arrest.”
