Mayor de Blasio plans to skip one of the year’s biggest gay pride dinners Thursday night – which is honoring his openly-gay former Democratic rival Christine Quinn.
“He had a scheduling conflict is my understanding,” said Allison Steinberg, a spokesman for the Empire State Pride Agenda, which is holding the event. “That’s what his office told us.”
But Hizzoner isn’t sending an LGBT liaison from his office either – as form would typically mandate for elected officials invited to such high-profile dinners, Steinberg added.
The group’s annual gala, which former Mayor Bloomberg attended numerous times when he was in City Hall, has attracted big-name politicians such as Sen. Schumer, Comptroller Scott Stringer and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
Quinn, de Blasio’s chief opponent during last year’s mayoral primary, is one of two honorees. She is described in the program as fighting “‘tirelessly to improve the lives of LGBT New Yorkers.”
The Empire State Pride Agenda famously defended Quinn against a broadside from de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray, who criticized her last year for being “not accessible” when it comes to “the concerns of women who have to take care of children at a young age or send them to school.”
The organization endorsed Quinn in the Democratic primary, before abcking de Blasio in the general election.
