Group Pushing for Walk and Bike Path Along Verrazano

The Verrazano Bridge is one of a few major bridges in the area without a pedestrian path and now a rally is being planned to try to change that.

A group called the Harbor Ring Committee wants the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to build a path that would allow people to walk or bike over the bridge.

They are pushing for the creation of the Harbor Ring, a 50 mile route that would connect Manhattan, Staten Island and Brooklyn with Jersey City, Bayonne and Hoboken.

New Yorkers who spoke with NY1 say they would welcome a pedestrian path on the bridge.

“Every other bridge has it – Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s just another way of getting around and people like biking and staying health so I think it’s good for them to try and make their way over without causing more traffic,” said one New Yorker.

A rally in support of the idea is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday on Staten Island.
