Congressional candidate Domenic Recchia skipped another debate in Brooklyn Tuesday night, providing ammunition for his rival, the incumbent Michael Grimm. NY1′s Courtney Gross filed the following report.
Another Brooklyn debate, and Congressman Michael Grimm is appearing alone, without his Democratic challenger.
“My opponent has run a very negative campaign. It’s ‘Michael Grimm is bad, so vote for me,’” Grimm said.
That opponent, Grimm’s Democratic challenger Domenic Recchia, had other plans Tuesday night.
Gross: “Can you give us specifics about where you will be tonight?”
Recchia: “We have different stops tonight on the schedule.”
One of those was at this fundraiser on Staten Island. The suggested donation was $ 75.
“My opponent had a fundraiser on Staten Island at 7 p.m. blocks away from the event that I had at 7 p.m. on the north shore of Staten Island, and I am here,” Grimm said.
Earlier in the day, Recchia was endorsed by New York State court officers, and he argued he was not ducking the one-on-one challenge.
“We already debated once. We have a busy, busy schedule. We have a lot of requests. We are out there day in and day out talking to people,” Recchia said.
The people here in Brooklyn Tuesday night leaned Republican. In fact, one of the event’s organizers is a staffer for the congressman.
“He is a coward—bottom line. They always say pick on someone your own size. I am standing right here,” Grimm said.
While this was a one-man show, there are three other debates scheduled, including one hosted by NY1.
