Professional football is kicking off here in the city for the first time since the 80′s.
The Brooklyn Bolts will play their first game on Wednesday at MCU Park, the summer home of the Brooklyn Cyclones.
The Bolts are part of a new four-team league known as the Fall Experimental Football League, or the FXFL.
The team’s head coach says the league was created to give young athletes a chance to keep playing football.
He says the roster includes guys who were once drafted or started in the NFL, but were released.
“The idea behind it is to give young men a chance to keep playing football, be able to be seen by scouts, and get film that they can show scouts so they can play—and at the same time have the seasons coincide with the National Football League so that if the NFL needs a player, there’s one ready to go,” says Bolts Head Coach John Bock.
“It’s new. I’ve never been over to New York. I really like it so far. I think we’ve got like a tough mentality and, I think, from what I’ve heard that fits in with the city really well,” says linebacker Johnny Millard.
Two other teams in the league are based out of Omaha and Boston. There’s also a regional all-star team.
