Court Rules in Favor of NYU Greenwich Village Expansion Plans

New York University got the go-ahead to proceed with a controversial plan to expand its Greenwich Village campus.

An appeals court reversed a decision made earlier this year to protect spaces being used as unofficial park land from being taken over by the school.

The court ruled the city and those pushing to keep the space had not properly filed to preserve the land as official city park land.

The planned expansion spans the six-block area between West Houston Street, Laguardia Place, West Third Street and Mercer Street.

Community groups and residents filed suit against NYU in 2012, saying the expansion would radically alter the neighborhood.

In a statement on the $ 6 billion plan, a spokesperson for the university said,

“The need for additional academic space is clear and has been reaffirmed by a faculty-led committee, and it is now also clear that the University has the legal right to proceed with this project.”
