Police want you to see surveillance video of the man they believed attacked someone with a hammer in Brooklyn. Detectives hope you can help them solve this possible hate crime. NY1′s Michael Herzenberg filed the following report.
Police believe the man seen in surveillance video used a hammer in his hand to bash-in another man’s head.
“Five staples and a fractured skull,” says Mitcheal Pope.
Pope says doctors told him he suffered no internal bleeding. He says the attack happened Monday around 11 a.m. as he returned to his Crown Heights apartment with his morning cup of coffee.
“I noticed that somebody was behind me with a black trash bag and so I just assumed he was doing construction on the building, which happens a lot here and I opened the door for him,” Pope says.
Pope says he can’t remember if he was walking to the mailbox or directly to the stairs, but he was hit from behind.
“And then I fell backwards on the smaller staircase on the side while he was on top of me hitting me over and over again saying f— with each blow. At that point, I felt my life was in danger because I saw the actual hammer, so I started screaming and fighting,” Pope recalls.
He says the suspect then took off with his cell phone as neighbors came outside. The 33-year-old victim says he hasn’t had problems here before, didn’t know the suspect and wants him off the street for his safety and for the safety of others.
“It happened so fast. I was just horrified, like I really thought he was going to take my life,” Pope says.
The victim says the NYPD has been very responsive and even gave him a ride around the neighborhood Tuesday looking for the suspect.
