Man Hospitalized After Being Shot by Police in Harlem

A man is in the hospital after being shot by police Thursday afternoon.

It happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. in Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park.

Sources say police stopped three people who they thought were acting suspiciously when one of them tried to run.

Investigators say once officers caught up to the man, he tried to fight back.

At one point, mace was used, and the suspect was shot.

One witness NY1 spoke with said he heard police tell the suspect to let go of a weapon.

“We were sitting back there having a cigarette, and we heard when the, I guess it was an officer, he said, ‘Drop the gun’ three times, and then, all you heard just one gunshot – pop – that’s it. And then, these people came from all over,” the witness said.

The 28-year-old victim was taken to Harlem Hospital with serious injuries.

An officer was also taken to St. Luke’s Hospital and is expected to recover.
