Governor Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on Wednesday announced new security measures following a bi-state review sparked by a rise in international terror activity.
Under the plan, 500 National Guard troops will be deployed to trains and platforms on subways, Metro-North and the Long Island Rail Road.
There will also be extra bag checks and vehicle checkpoints at key crossings.
The new procedures will begin immediately.
While they emphasize this is not in response to any specific threat, officials believe the two states working together will help make citizens feel safer.
“There is no border between New York and New Jersey when it comes to public safety, and that coordination, that mutuality is paramount, and that’s the message that Governor Christie and I have been sending from day one,” Cuomo said.
“We need to make sure that we do everything we can to give assurance to the people of both of our states that we are going to do everything we can to provide for the most important thing that government provides, which is the public safety of its people,” Christie said.
The new security procedures will be a joint effort between a number of agencies including the New York City Police Department, Port Authority, National Guard and the Department of Homeland Security.
