A contractor who lied about using minority-owned subcontractors for multimillion-dollar projects on the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge and the Staten Island Ferry Terminal was charged with wire fraud Friday and faces 20 years in prison, the US Attorney’s Office said.
Aaron Tubbs, 43, of Hastings-on-Hudson, Westchester, falsely claimed that the steel used for the $ 192 million Bronx-Whitestone project in 2008 and 2009 came from a minority-owned business.
He also used the same scheme with federal stimulus money to do construction on the St. George Ferry Terminal project in 2009.
MTA Inspector General Barry Kluger said the agency aggressively pursues those who lie about using minority firms.
