Mayor de Blasio Friday defended the hiring of his wife’s chief-of-staff Rachel Noerdlinger, despite the top aide’s long live-in relationship with a convicted killer and cop-hater Hassaun McFarlan.
“I have full faith in Rachel,” de Blasio said on Friday outside of City Hall.
“You don’t fire people because of something their boyfriend said, that’s ludicrous. And again, I have absolute faith in her and I know what I value and she values the same thing.”
Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch called for Noerdlinger’s firing because of comments McFarlan,36, made on social networks calling police officers “pigs.”
When asked if Noerdlinger – a former aide to Al Sharpton who attends high-level NYPD CompStat meetings – should be dismissed from her top job at City Hall, the Mayor suggested it was a smear by association.
“Respectfully I think the question you’re asking is the wrong question. We don’t care what someone’s boyfriend said, we care what the public servant’s about,” he said.
“She’s very dedicated to the work of bringing police and community together and that’s what we care about.”
“We need a closer relationship between the police and the community and that’s what we’re working to build every day.”
Noerdlinger’s boyfriend has had his fair share of brush-ups with the cops. He has a rap sheet that includes homicide, interstate drug trafficking, and nearly running a cop off the road in Edgewater, NJ, last year with Noerdlinger’s car in an incident that was later pleaded down to disorderly conduct.
